On-site solar professionals are responsible for the physical deployment and upkeep of solar energy systems.1. Site Assessment & Preparation Surveying: Measuring roof dimensions, checking for shading (using tools like a SunEye), and evaluating the structural integrity of the mounting surface. Safety Setup: Installing fall protection, ladders, and scaffolding to ensure a safe workspace. Inventory: Verifying that all panels, inverters, racking, and wiring are present and undamaged upon arrival.2. Physical Installation (Mechanical & Electrical)Racking & Mounting: Attaching the skeleton structure to the roof or ground, ensuring it is waterproof and aligned for maximum sun exposure. Panel Deployment: Lifting, positioning, and securing solar modules onto the racking. Electrical Wiring: Running DC wiring between panels, installing inverters/micro-inverters, and connecting the system to the main electrical panel (often under the supervision of a licensed electrician).3. Testing & Commissioning Verification: Using multimeters to test voltage and polarity before flipping the switch. Activation: Working with the utility company to turn the system on and ensuring the monitoring software is reporting data correctly.4. Operations & Maintenance (O&M)Troubleshooting: Diagnosing why a system is underperforming using thermal cameras or electrical testing. Cleaning & Repair: Removing debris/snow from panels and replacing faulty components like optimizers or fuses.๐ Required Skills & Physical Demands Working on-site is physically demanding and requires a high level of technical awareness. Category Requirements Physical Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work on steep roofs in extreme heat or cold. Technical Proficiency with power tools (impact drivers, saws), multimeters, and basic electrical theory. Safety Strong knowledge of OSHA standards (Fall Protection, Lockout/Tagout).Certifications NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) is highly valued.
