The role is a mix of digital coding and physical mechanical work.
1. Programming (Digital Phase)
Code Development: Writing G-codes and M-codes manually or using CAM software (like Mastercam, Delcam, or SolidCAM) to define the machine's path.
Optimization: Refining programs to reduce cycle time (the time it takes to make one part) while maintaining quality.
Simulation: Running digital simulations to check for crashes—ensuring the tool doesn't hit the machine frame or fixtures.
2. Setting & Operating (Physical Phase)
Machine Setup: Installing the correct cutting tools, jigs, and fixtures as required by the job sheet.
Workholding: Securing the raw material (metal, plastic, or wood) onto the machine bed using clamps or vices.
Operation: Running the machine, adjusting speeds and feeds, and managing the flow of coolant to prevent overheating.
3. Quality Control
First-Part Inspection: Measuring the very first part produced in a batch using precision tools (calipers, micrometers, or height gauges) to ensure it matches the drawing.
In-Process Checks: Monitoring the machine throughout the day to catch tool wear or deviations in accuracy.
